What to Wear to an Indian Wedding: A Function-by-Function Guide
You have the invitation. There are four functions across three days. And you have absolutely no idea what to wear to any of them.
Take a breath. Here is a straightforward guide to dressing for an Indian wedding — function by function.
The Mehendi
The mood: Bright, playful, informal. You will be sitting on the floor, eating, laughing, possibly getting henna done yourself.
What works: A light cotton or georgette suit set, a co-ord set, or a comfortable Anarkali. Yellows, greens, oranges — anything that photographs well against henna.
What to avoid: Heavy fabrics and long trailing dupattas. You will be sitting, moving, reaching. Comfort wins.
The Haldi
The mood: Yellow, messy, joyful.
What works: Something yellow, and something you genuinely do not mind staining. Turmeric does not come out. A simple cotton suit or a light co-ord is ideal.
What to avoid: Anything expensive. This is not the day for your Banarasi.
The Sangeet
The mood: A party. There will be dancing.
What works: An Indo-Western lehenga, a party-wear saree, or a co-ord set with some shimmer. This is the function where you can be bold.
What to avoid: Anything you cannot dance in. Test it at home first — genuinely.
The Wedding Ceremony
The mood: The main event. Traditional, formal, photographed endlessly.
What works: This is the moment for silk. A Banarasi saree, a heavy work saree, or a well-made lehenga. Deep reds, wines, golds, royal blues.
What to avoid: White and black, traditionally. And do not outshine the bride — a real rule, not a joke.
The Reception
The mood: Elegant, evening, a little glamorous.
What works: A gown, an Indo-Western piece, or a sophisticated pre-draped saree. Think refined rather than loud.
A few universal rules
- Comfort is not optional. These are long days. If your outfit hurts at hour two, you have nine hours left.
- Ready-to-wear saves you. On a packed morning, a pre-draped saree is the difference between arriving calm and arriving late.
- Repeat outfits. Nobody is keeping score. Rewear with different jewellery.
