Choosing the Right Saree for Your Body Type
The best thing about a saree is that it suits everyone. The catch is that not every saree suits everyone in the same way.
Choosing well is less about rules and more about knowing what fabric does. Here is a practical guide.
If you are petite
Look for: Lighter fabrics — georgette, chiffon, satin silk. Smaller motifs. Narrow borders.
Why: Heavy fabric adds bulk, and a wide border cuts your frame visually. Fine pleats and a lighter drape elongate.
Tip: Pin the pallu close to the shoulder rather than letting it fall wide. And wear heels.
If you are tall
Look for: You can carry almost anything — including heavy Banarasi silks, broad borders, and large motifs.
Why: Your frame balances the volume that overwhelms smaller builds.
Tip: A contrast border works especially well on you. Use it.
If you are curvy
Look for: Structured fabrics that drape cleanly — satin silk, crepe, well-woven georgette.
Why: Very stiff fabrics add width; very clingy ones cling. You want something with fluid weight.
Tip: A well-fitted blouse matters more than the saree itself. Do not skip the tailoring.
If you are slim
Look for: Fabrics with body — Banarasi silk, tissue, organza. Layered drapes.
Why: They add structure and create shape.
Tip: Broader pleats work in your favour.
The things that matter more than body type
Honestly? Three things beat all of the above:
- The blouse fits. A perfect saree with a badly fitted blouse looks wrong. A simple saree with a beautifully fitted blouse looks expensive.
- The hem is right. One inch off the floor, with the shoes you will actually wear.
- You feel like yourself. This is not a small thing. Confidence is visible.
Colour, briefly
Deep jewel tones — wine, emerald, royal blue, mehroon — flatter almost every Indian skin tone. Pastels are lovely for daytime. Bright yellows and oranges are festival colours for a reason.
But wear the colour you love. That rule outranks the rest.
