The Complete Guide to Banarasi Sarees
Ask any Indian woman about the one saree she would keep forever, and there is a good chance she will say Banarasi.
Woven in the city of Varanasi on the banks of the Ganga, the Banarasi saree is not simply a garment. It is a craft that has passed from hand to hand, loom to loom, for generations.
What makes a Banarasi saree special?
It comes down to the weave. Traditional Banarasi sarees are woven on handlooms, often taking weeks — sometimes months — for a single piece. The fabric is dense, the drape is rich, and the motifs are unmistakable.
Look closely at a Banarasi and you will find florals, paisleys, vines, and jaali patterns, frequently worked in gold or silver zari thread. The result catches the light in a way printed fabric never can.
The styles worth knowing
Pure Silk (Katan)
The classic. Woven from pure silk threads, it is heavy, lustrous, and drapes beautifully. This is the Banarasi most brides reach for.
Organza and Tissue
Lighter, sheerer, and easier to carry through a long event. A good choice if you find heavy silk overwhelming.
Georgette Banarasi
Softer, with more fluid movement. Comfortable, forgiving, and lovely for evening functions.
Satin Silk
Smooth and glossy with a fluid fall. It brings the Banarasi tradition into a more contemporary, wearable form.
How to spot a good one
- Check the reverse. On a genuine handwoven Banarasi, you will see floats of thread on the back where the motif is woven — not a printed impression.
- Feel the weight. Real silk has a heft and a coolness to it.
- Look at the zari. Good zari work is even, tight, and catches light from every angle.
When to wear it
Weddings, obviously. But a Banarasi is not only for brides. A lighter Banarasi with a contrast border is beautiful at a festive lunch, a puja, or an anniversary dinner. The heavier ones deserve the big occasions — and reward them.
Caring for your Banarasi
Never machine wash. Dry clean only. Store it wrapped in muslin, not plastic, and refold it every few months so the creases do not set into the zari.
